Word Search

Find every hidden word in the grid, across, down or diagonal.

How to Play Word Search

Our free online word search puzzles hide nine themed words in an 11 by 11 grid of letters. Words can run across, down or diagonally, and some are written backwards. Find them all as fast as you can.

  • Drag your finger or mouse from the first letter to the last letter of a word.
  • Or tap the first letter, then tap the last letter.
  • Found words are highlighted in the grid and crossed off the list.
  • The timer stops when you find the last word. Your best time is saved.

Every puzzle has a theme, and there are sixteen of them: Animals, Fruits, Vegetables, Colors, Sports, Ocean, Weather, Kitchen, Music, Space, Body, Jobs, Clothes, Travel, School and Garden. Play the daily word search, which is the same for everyone, or switch to unlimited mode for a new puzzle whenever you like.

A Smart Way to Solve a Grid

Let's say today's theme is Animals and your list includes GIRAFFE, ZEBRA and KANGAROO. Instead of reading the grid line by line, try this order:

  1. Start with the rare letters. ZEBRA has a Z, and there are very few Zs in a grid. Find each Z and check the eight directions around it for an E. Once you see Z-E, follow that line to confirm ZEBRA.
  2. Use double letters. GIRAFFE has a double F. Two Fs side by side, or touching diagonally, are easy to spot and point straight to the word.
  3. Go for the long words next. KANGAROO is eight letters long, so it stretches across most of the grid. Long words are harder to hide, and finding them early clears space in your mind for the short ones.
  4. Finish with the short words. Four- and five-letter words like LION or PANDA blend into the background. By the time you look for them, many letters are already highlighted, so there are fewer places to search.

Word Search Tips and Tricks

Scan for uncommon letters

Letters like Z, X, Q, J, K, V and W appear less often in the filler letters, so they stand out. If a word on your list contains one of them, start there.

Look for letter pairs, not single letters

Searching for the first letter alone is slow, because common letters appear everywhere. Searching for the first two letters together, like the "PE" of PENGUIN, cuts the possibilities dramatically.

Remember all eight directions

Words can go left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top and along both diagonals in either direction. Many players forget the backwards diagonals, which is exactly where the last word tends to hide.

Change your viewpoint

If you're stuck, scan the grid column by column instead of row by row, or focus on one corner at a time. A fresh angle often reveals a word you've looked past several times.

Race your best time

Once you're comfortable, try to beat your personal best. The timer starts with the puzzle and stops on the last word, and your fastest time is saved on your device.

The History of the Word Search

The word search puzzle as we know it is usually credited to Norman E. Gibat, who published one in a small newspaper in Oklahoma in 1968. Teachers quickly discovered that it was a fun way to practice spelling, and within a few years word search puzzles were appearing in newspapers, activity books and magazines around the world. In Spanish they are called sopa de letras, "letter soup", a perfect name for a grid where words float among random letters. Today they're one of the most popular puzzles for all ages, and digital versions make them faster to play with no pencil required.

Benefits of Playing Word Search

Word search puzzles are relaxing, but they also train useful skills. Scanning the grid builds visual attention and pattern recognition, and keeping several target words in mind exercises working memory. Because each puzzle follows a theme, it's also a gentle way to learn vocabulary in groups: a list of kitchen tools, musical instruments or planets is easier to remember than random words. That makes our themed puzzles a good fit for children, English learners and anyone who wants a calm mental break.
