Word Hive

Make as many words as you can from 7 letters. Every word must use the center letter.

How to Play Word Hive

Word Hive gives you seven letters arranged in a honeycomb. Your goal is to make as many words as you can using only those letters. It's a free online word puzzle you can play every day, with a new hive at midnight, or as many times as you like in unlimited mode.

  • Every word must contain the center letter.
  • Words must be at least 4 letters long.
  • Letters can be used more than once in a word.
  • Proper nouns, hyphenated words and offensive words are not included.

You can type with your keyboard or tap the letters. Press Enter to submit a word and Backspace to delete. The space bar shuffles the outer letters.

Scoring and Ranks

A four-letter word is worth 1 point. Longer words are worth one point per letter, so a six-letter word earns 6 points and an eight-letter word earns 8. Every hive hides at least one pangram, a word that uses all seven letters at least once, and it earns 7 bonus points on top of its length.

As your score grows you climb the ranks: Starter, Warming up, Steady, Sharp, Clever, Brilliant and finally Wordsmith. Ranks are based on a share of the maximum score for that particular puzzle, so a hive with fewer possible words is just as fair as one with hundreds. Reaching Clever counts as a win for your daily streak, but nothing stops you from going all the way to Wordsmith.

A Sample Hive, Step by Step

Imagine a hive with T in the center and the letters C, A, P, I, O and N around it. Here's how a typical round might go:

  1. Start with short, obvious words. COAT, TACO, IOTA and TINT come quickly and give you a few points to get moving.
  2. Build longer words from the short ones. PAINT leads to POINT and PINTO. TONIC leads to OPTIC and TOPIC.
  3. Try common endings. English loves -TION, and these letters make ACTION, NATION, OPTION and POTION, each worth 6 points.
  4. Look for the pangram. With seven letters and a -TION ending available, CAPTION jumps out: 7 letters plus 7 bonus points makes 14 points from a single word.
  5. Don't forget repeated letters. TAINT, TACIT, ATTIC and INTACT reuse letters, which many players overlook.

Notice how one discovery leads to the next. That chain reaction is what makes Word Hive so satisfying, and it's the main skill you'll build the more you play.

Strategies to Climb the Ranks Faster

Think in word families

English words come in families. When you find a base word, check its plural, its past tense, its -ING form and any words formed with prefixes like RE-, UN- or PRE-. If the letters allow it, PLAY can become PLAYS, PLAYED, PLAYER and REPLAY. Each variation counts as a separate word.

Work with prefixes and suffixes

Scan the hive for endings that appear in thousands of words: -ED, -ER, -ING, -ION, -LY, -NESS and -MENT. If the hive includes an E and a D, past tenses are likely to be productive. If it includes I, N and G, -ING words can add up fast.

Pair consonants with vowels

When you feel stuck, pick one consonant and try it before and after each vowel. With a center letter of R you might test RA-, RE-, RO-, then -AR, -ER, -OR. Saying the sounds quietly to yourself often unlocks words your eyes didn't see.

Shuffle often

Your brain gets used to a fixed arrangement of letters. Pressing the space bar or the shuffle button rearranges the outer letters and frequently reveals a word that was hiding in plain sight.

Take a break and come back

The daily hive is available all day. Many experienced players find a batch of words in the morning and return later with fresh eyes. Your progress is saved on your device, so you can close the page and pick up exactly where you left off.

Why Word Hive Is Good Brain Training

Finding words in a limited set of letters exercises verbal fluency, the ability to pull words from memory quickly. It also trains pattern recognition and flexible thinking, because you constantly have to look at the same letters in new ways. For students and language learners, Word Hive is a gentle way to meet new vocabulary: when a word you didn't know is accepted, look it up and it's yours to keep.

Where Letter Hive Puzzles Come From

Puzzles that ask you to make words from a fixed set of letters are much older than the internet. Newspapers and puzzle magazines have printed "how many words can you make" challenges for generations, and teachers have long used them as classroom vocabulary warm-ups. The honeycomb layout, with one required letter in the middle, adds a clever twist: it limits the possible words and guarantees that every puzzle has a pangram to hunt for. Word Hive is our own free take on this classic format, with a new puzzle every day and unlimited extra hives whenever you want them.

Word Hive FAQ

What is a pangram in Word Hive?

A pangram is a word that uses all seven letters of the hive at least once. Every puzzle has at least one, and it earns 7 bonus points on top of its regular score.

Why wasn't my word accepted?

Words must have at least four letters, include the center letter and appear in our word list. We leave out proper nouns, hyphenated words, abbreviations, offensive words and very obscure terms. If you think we're missing a common word, let us know through the contact page.

Can I use the same letter twice?

Yes. Any letter in the hive can be used as many times as you like, so words like ATTIC or TOOT are allowed when the letters are available.

When does the daily hive change?

A new daily hive appears at midnight in your local time zone. Everyone plays the same hive on the same date, so you can compare scores with friends.

What do I need to win?

Reaching the Clever rank counts as a win for your daily streak. You can keep playing after that to reach Brilliant and Wordsmith.

Is there a limit on unlimited mode?

No. Unlimited mode creates a fresh hive every time you start a new game, so you can play as many as you want for free.

Can I play Word Hive in Spanish?

Yes. The Spanish version is called Colmena and uses its own Spanish word list.
